House of Representatives Passes Haiti TPS Bill

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill restoring the Haiti temporary protected status (TPS) designation on April 16, 2026. The bill passed 224-204, according to the Office of the Clerk of the U.S. House of Representatives. Instead of restoring any previous TPS designation, the bill creates a wholly new designation period.

Said bill, called H.R. 1689, mandates a new Haiti TPS designation. If enacted, the designation lasts until January 20, 2029. A new TPS designation grants Haitian nationals in the U.S. eligibility for:

  • Detention and Removal Protection.
  • Employment Authorization.
  • Lawful entry and presence within the U.S.

TPS designations are usually based on conditions such as armed conflict, environmental disaster, or other extraordinary circumstances that keep individuals from returning to their country of origin. While the House passed the bill, it still needs approval from the Senate and the President’s approval before becoming law.
