The New York Times reported twenty-five arrests by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at more than a dozen U.S. airports. This is part of new ICE strategy targeting foreign nationals with expired visas at airports specifically. Initially, ICE operations at airports targeted individuals with court-approved removal orders. This new plan expands airport ICE arrests to a much larger group.

ICE agents began working at major U.S. airports in late March, 2026. This was primarily for helping Transportation and Security Administration (TSA) agents during the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown. However, data sharing between the two agencies began in May, 2025. Until then, the federal government avoided involving TSA agents in immigration enforcement operations.

These changes let ICE cast a wider net for arrests. It’s uncertain how many foreign nationals the agency arrested in the newest initiative. The U.S. government set a target for two thousand immigration arrests per day. Immigration attorneys explained these arrests affected educated professionals, laborers, and recently married spouses of U.S. citizens.
