Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations haven’t helped U.S.-born workers. According to Forbes, enforcement operations harm U.S. workers. This data contradicts the central justification of the government’s increasingly strict stance towards immigration.
According to a study published by the National Bureau of Economic Research, areas subject to immigration enforcement operations saw a four percent reduction in employment. That equates to a rate of roughly six people dropping out of the labor force every arrest. This trend explains why employers expressed difficulties finding workers beyond the total number of people detained or removed from the U.S.
This study indicates mass removal isn’t a viable strategy for protecting U.S. born workers. Unemployment of U.S. citizens rose by 0.3 percent over the past year. This is partly due to employers simply stop hiring when they can’t find willing immigrants.
