On the 11th anniversary of DACA, the program’s future remains uncertain. DACA, which stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, was introduced by President Obama to provide protection for eligible immigrants who came to the U.S. as children. The program allows them to study and work in the country without fear of being deported. However, the program has faced legal challenges over the past six years.
The fate of the DACA program is currently being decided in federal court. The federal judge in Texas reviewing the case has previously ruled that the program was not implemented properly and therefore unlawful. Individuals who already have DACA protection can still renew their status. There are around 580,000 people who are eligible to renew their DACA status every two years. Unfortunately, since the program was deemed unlawful, approximately 400,000 additional individuals are unable to apply for DACA for the first time. Moreover, about 93,000 individuals were in the process of applying for DACA when the federal court decided to end the option for new applicants.
