The Department of Justice (DOJ) planned denaturalization procedures for a total of three hundred and eighty-four foreign born U.S. citizens. The move reflects an increase in the pace and scope of denaturalization operations. The DOJ assigned each of the cases to dozens of attorney’s offices throughout the country.
According to the New York Times, the DOJ assigned each of the denaturalization cases civil litigators in thirty-nine offices across the U.S. Historically, specialists within the DOJ handle cases stripping naturalized citizens of their status. Enlisting regular prosecutors might increase the speed and scale of denaturalization proceedings. Additionally, the move comes just months after the government ordered the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) refer two hundred denaturalization cases a month to the DOJ. To date, the government has not publicly explained the basis for selecting the individuals in this initial wave.
