Customs and Border Protection (CBP) confirmed the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) fee increased from twenty-one to forty dollars for visa waiver program (VWP) members. The change applies to all new or renewal applications filed on or after September 30, 2025. Individuals subjected to pre-travel screening should apply for ESTA as soon as possible.
ESTA Overview
ESTA is the online clearance system allowing eligible VWP travelers seeking admission to the U.S. for up to ninety days for business or tourism. The system lets individuals store biographical information and answer security questions. This helps the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) pre-screen travelers before their departure.
ESTA approval doesn’t guarantee admission into the U.S. It only permits travelers to arrive at a port of entry and request entry. The final decision on admission rests with CBP officers at said port of entry. CBP recommends VWP travelers submit an ESTA application no later than seventy-two hours before departure.
Leaving the U.S.
Foreign nationals entering the U.S. receive an electronic I-94 record documenting their arrival and their plan length of stay. The CBP integrates this data into the Arrival and Departure Information System (ADIS). The ADIS portal combines passport, visa, ESTA approval, and airline data, creating a comprehensive travel history for every foreign national visiting the U.S.
On December 10, 2025 CBP issued a notice that visiting foreign nationals can take part in a voluntary pilot program. This program lets visitors “check out” via the CBP app when the depart the U.S. While available to VWP travelers, participation is entirely optional and refusal isn’t seen status violation.
