SEVP Students Must File I-94

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced required Form I-94 filing for individuals in the Student Visitor Exchange Program (SEVP) upon entry in the U.S. Form I-94, or Arrival/Departure Record. This document verifies their legal entry into the U.S. Without it, international students face status revocation and removal.

When a student arrives at a U.S. port of entry, CBP officers issue an electronic Form I-94. The Form I-94 confirms the student’s legal status in the U.S. and the reason for the stay. This document includes the following information:

  • Proof of legal entry into the U.S.
  • Length of stay/Admission Period.
  • Immigration status (what visa they’re under).

Students can print off a free paper copy online. Entering certain traveler information, such as passport number, grants students viewing access to their Form I-94. Always keep a physical Form I-94 copy on hand, as institutions often request one for their records.

Form I-94 is essential for foreign students that:

  • Enrolling in their school.
  • Applying for a driver’s license, Social Security number, or work authorization.
  • Proving their legal status while in the U.S.

If a Form I-94 includes incorrect information, such as wrong visa type or expiration date, contact a CBP Deferred Inspection Site. Correcting any outstanding errors as soon as possible decreases the chances of being marked by immigration authorities. In an increasingly strict immigration landscape, any incorrect or absent information merits loss of status.
