Citizenship Test Overhaul Pushed by Immigration Officials

Top immigration officials say the current U.S. citizenship test isn’t doing enough to gauge whether applicants are ready to be citizens. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) officials have called the citizenship test to reflect Congress’ intentions. USCIS explained that applicants should demonstrate an understanding of English, US history, and how the U.S. government functions.

The current citizenship test does require applicants to read and write one sentence in English. USCIS wants the citizenship test to probe deeper than it already does. Immigration agents should assess an applicant’s English proficiency throughout the test, not just during the reading and writing section.

The goal is to see if the applicants can really comprehend the questions they’re asked. USCIS claims the changes will help reduce the backlogs in the immigration system. They also claimed allocating more resources towards visa application processing will reduce backlogs and overhauling the citizenship test will have national security benefits.
