Guantánamo Bay Prepares to Detain Migrants

Guantánamo Bay prepares to detain migrants as per President Trump’s orders. The President ordered the Department of Defense (DOD) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to prepare the naval station to hold thirty thousand migrants. The new directive means to help combat the flow of migration over the United States’ southern border.

Guantánamo Bay regularly detention center houses suspected terrorists, with several instances of abuse reported since its opening. President Trump’s critics fear these same abuses happening to detained migrants. There were also questions regarding the legitimacy of using the base-a military installation-for civil immigration detention and management. Many have also criticized the order’s details for being too vague.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth clarified that the site has temporarily housed migrants in the past. Further, he stated undocumented migrants and those in Guantanamo for other crimes, such as terrorism, will be held separately. Further, Hegseth stated that a more permanent facility is being prepared, meaning the migrants detained in Guantánamo won’t be held there permanently.
