ILBSG is noticing that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is increasing site visits to check on STEM OPT participants. During these visits, DHS makes sure that the program requirements are being met. They review the information on the student’s Form I-983 to ensure everything is being followed correctly.
Usually, DHS will give at least 48 hour’s notice before a site visit. However, if there is a complaint or signs of problems, DHS can visit at any time without prior notice. Both employers and employees need to be prepared to meet all DHS requests whenever needed.
What to Expect During a DHS Site Visit
DHS site visits focus on checking the details of student STEM OPT employment. Employers must provide work-based learning experiences as described in the student’s Form I-983. Here’s how to be ready for a site visit at any time:
- Update Information: Make sure that the employer’s address and home address are always current. Check the SEVP Portal or other updates from school officials. The address where the student works should be correct, and if it’s at a client’s site, include the client’s name and address along with that of the STEM OPT employer.
- Keep Form I-983 Updated: Have the student’s Form I-983 completed with the latest details and readily available. Upload required documents to the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) so they are easy to access.
- Supervisory Details: DHS will check if there are enough supervisors and resources to train the student properly. They will also need proof of how wages were determined for similar U.S. workers. This information should be available as it was included in the initial application. DHS might also ask for information by phone or email before the visit.
