Immigration Updates May Be Included in Foreign Funding Package

Congress is working on a deal for potential legislation to provide supplemental funding to Israel, Ukraine, and the Indo-Pacific region before the end of the year. Immigration policy is a key sticking point in the negotiations. Republicans are demanding stricter border security measures and want changes to the asylum system in exchange for their support. Democrats are willing to make some concessions, but they are opposed to significant changes to the parole process.

A pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants is unlikely to be included in the final bill. That includes any updates to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Border security is almost certain to be included, as a majority of Republicans have said they will not vote for the funding package without some changes to border policy.

The bipartisan group of lawmakers working on the legislation is making progress, and they hope to have a final proposal ready by early next week. The goal is to pass the bill before the Christmas break.
