Americans Embrace Immigration with Some Concerns

Most Americans think immigration is beneficial for the country per a recent Gallup poll. They prefer to maintain current levels or even increase immigration rather than reducing it. However, there are some concerns about immigration’s impact on crime, drug issues, and taxes, though these worries are not as widespread.

According to the poll conducted from June 1 to June 22, 2023, 68% of Americans view immigration as a positive thing for the country. In 2020, this number was even higher at 77%.

On the other hand, 27% of Americans see immigration as a negative aspect. This viewpoint is divided along political lines, with 43% of Republicans, 10% of Democrats, and 28% of Independents holding this view.

The poll was taken after pandemic-related regulations, like Title 42, were lifted. Title 42 allowed the immediate deportation of individuals crossing into the U.S. without a legal basis or asylum hearing. New laws have been put in place to discourage unauthorized entry into the country.

The poll also asked how individuals perceive the impact of immigrants in different areas:

  • Over half of the participants believe immigrants enrich the country’s food, music, and arts.
  • 32% think immigrants improve moral and social values, while 25% believe they have a negative impact.
  • 55% believe immigration worsens issues related to drugs, crime, and taxes.
  • 39% believe immigrants benefit the economy, while 38% believe they have a negative impact.
  • The majority of people believe immigration has no significant effect on job opportunities for Americans and their families. However, 26% think immigrants are harmful in this regard, and 18% think they are helpful.
