Trial of Updated Naturalization Test Trial Announced by USCIS

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced a trial of an updated version of the naturalization test. The naturalization test is one of the final steps in becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen. The current test consists of two parts. The first is an English language component that evaluates an applicant’s ability to read, write, and speak English. The second is a U.S. civics component that evaluates an applicant’s knowledge of the U.S. government and history.

USCIS will seek approximately 1,500 adult participants enrolled in English language courses and preparing for the naturalization test. The trial is expected to take place over a five-month period in 2023. USCIS may use the results of the trial to support future changes to the naturalization test.

The trial test is part of a directive by the Biden Administration to review the overall process. USCIS subject matter experts reviewed the current test and suggested a redesign of the speaking and civics components.
