The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown might end soon, because the Senate passed a temporary funding measure on April 1, 2026. The House of Representatives must formally vote to end the shutdown. This can’t happen until the House reconvenes after the spring recess ends.
The previous shutdown started on January 30, 2026 when Congress couldn’t pass funding for the DHS considering widespread scrutiny of immigration agents during enforcement operations. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrived at airports for supplementing an overburdened Transport Security Administration (TSA) in response. The Senate approved paying DHS employees for the six week shutdown. However, Congress hasn’t passed a formal budget for the remainder of the 2026 fiscal year. Finally, the House hasn’t voted on ending the shutdown yet, but will do so on April 13, 2026.
