Social Media Vetting Expands to Fiancé Visa

The Department of State (DOS) expanded its social media vetting protocols to more visa types, including the K-1 fiancé visa. Previously, only H-1B, F, J, and M visa applicants had their social media accounts reviewed.  The new guidelines took effect on March 30, 2026.

Impacted Applicants

DOS reviews the social media accounts of the following visa applicants.

  • The H-1B visa.
  • The F, M, and J student visas.
  • The K-1 fiancé visa.
  • The K-2 and K-3 visas.
  • The Humanitarian S, T, and U visas.
  • H-4 dependents of H-3 visa holders.

Going forward, applicants must ensure all their social media accounts comply with DOS standards before submitting a visa application. This includes any accounts not obviously linked to the applicant. Disclosing one’s complete social media presence maximizes the odds of approval.
