USCIS Processing Facilities Closed Due to Extreme Weather

Multiple U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) processing facilities across the Midwest due to hazardous weather conditions. The closures affect field offices and application centers in multiple cities. It’s unclear when exactly will reopen due to extraordinary circumstances behind their closure.

Affected Locations

The wind chill in certain areas of multiple states will drop below zero. This means individuals risk frostbite within minutes of going out. Due to extreme cold, USCIS processing facilities in the following states will temporarily close until temperatures improve. Specifically, USCIS application support centers in the following cities are closed until notice:

  • Illinois:
    • Chicago, Norridge, Naperville, and Waukegan.
  • Indiana:
    • Michigan City.
  • Iowa:
    • Des Moines.
  • Minnesota:
    • St. Paul.
  • North Dakota:
    • Fargo.
  • South Dakota:
    • Sioux Falls.
  • Wisconsin:
    • Milwaukee.

The support center in Fargo reopened on January 23, 2025. It’s uncertain when the other facilities will reopen.

Additionally, USCIS advised individuals who use support offices in the following areas go to alternate locations until weather improves:

  • Georgia:
    • Fort Benning.
  • South Carolina:
    • Fort Jackson.
  • Oklahoma:
    • Fort Sill.

The closures mean any immigration processing at these facilities is on hold until they reopen. Individuals planning on submitting USCIS applications in the affected areas should stay alert for when the proper facilities reopen. Individuals can also go to alternative USCIS locations for any urgent submissions.
