The U.S. Department of State (DOS) is requiring visa bond deposits for travelers from certain countries. The new policy, called the Visa Bond Pilot Program, requires travelers to make a fifteen-thousand-dollar deposit for a B-1 or B-2 visa. The program goes into effect on August 20, 2025, and will last one year.
The DOS also published a list of countries affected by the program. Presently, only Malawi and Zambia are included in the program. The DOS stated they’ll provide a more comprehensive list fifteen days before the policy goes into effect.
The visa bond pilot program will only apply to B-1 and B-2 visitor visas. All other nonimmigrant visas and Visa Waiver Program travelers won’t have to pay. Student visa visitors will also not have to pay.
The program offers three different entry fees of five thousand, ten thousand, and fifteen thousand dollars. Consular officials will set the visa bond amount. Said amount will be determined at the time of visa interview.
