New Program Launches for Detention and Removal of Undocumented Migrants

Hundreds of undocumented people have been arrested and removed from the U.S. According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), 538 people were arrested, and 373 were detained. Military planes have been used to deport these individuals. ICE says many of them are criminals, including people convicted of sex crimes against minors, members of foreign gangs, and suspected terrorists. This marks the beginning of the migrant detention program promised by President Trump.

Two flights took place overnight, with one carrying 81 deportees to Guatemala. Other flights removed more undocumented individuals. President Trump’s plan for mass deportations is in action, although Tom Homan, a Trump appointee, said that these arrests and removals are part of routine operations. There are about 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S., many of whom have been living in the country for years.

Arrests have taken place in cities like Atlanta, Boston, Denver, Miami, New York City, Philadelphia, Seattle, and Washington D.C. In New York. The Attorney General said the Trump administration cannot force local police to help with immigration arrests. In New York City, schools were told that ICE agents are not allowed inside, and the police were also instructed not to assist federal immigration efforts. New York has over 400,000 undocumented immigrants.

In Newark, New Jersey, the Mayor said ICE agents carried out a raid at a local business. He claimed that some citizens were detained alongside undocumented people, and the agents didn’t have a warrant. The Mayor has pledged to continue supporting his city’s residents.
