The Department of Homeland Security and the Department of State announced that Qatar is now part of the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). The Visa Waiver Program (VWP) offers important benefits for both the United States and eligible countries. It helps boost tourism and business, improves diplomatic ties, speeds up visa processing, and makes border crossings more efficient.
Starting no later than December 1, 2024, Qatari citizens can apply to visit the U.S. for tourism or business for up to 90 days without needing to get a visa first. They will need to use the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) to apply. Those with a B-1/B-2 visa can still use their existing visas to travel. B-1/B-2 visas continue to be an option for Qatari citizens.
To join the VWP, a country must meet strict requirements related to security, immigration control, and law enforcement. Visa refusals must be below 3% from the previous year, and there must be similar travel benefits for U.S. citizens. The Department of Homeland Security will continue monitoring compliance. U.S. citizens can already travel to Qatar without a visa. Starting October 1, 2024, qualifying U.S. citizens can stay in Qatar for up to 90 days instead of the previous limit of 30 days. Qatar is the first country in the Gulf region to join the program.
