Green Card Renewal Validity Extended to 36 Months

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that starting September 10, 2024, qualifying green card holders can have their green card validity extended. Qualifying Permanent Resident Cards are effective for a period of up to 36 months for those who file Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card, on a timely basis. To qualify, applicants must meet all requirements to keep their green card status.

Previously, the extension of validity was only 24 months. The new extension period will be counted from the expiration date on the green card.

USCIS updated Form I-90 receipt notices with new language for those who qualify. These updated notices started being sent out on September 10, 2024 to people with pending applications. The receipt notice can be used along with an expired green card as proof of continued legal status. This extension is a response to longer processing times.

If an individual doesn’t have their green card or needs proof of their legal status while waiting for a replacement, they can schedule an appointment at a USCIS office. For eligible individuals, an ADIT stamp may be issued after filing Form I-90. If someone needs to change their mailing address while waiting, they should update their USCIS online account.
