Illegal migrant crossings at the U.S. southern border dropped by over 50% for the month of May 2024 compared to the historic high in December 2023. Usually, illegal crossings increase in the spring. However, May marks the third month in a row seeing a decrease in illegal crossings, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This drop is partly due to Mexico taking a tougher stance and stopping more migrants heading for the U.S.
Even with the decrease, illegal crossings are still higher than before the pandemic. A bipartisan bill with measures to address these issues has been stalled twice. The Biden administration is thinking about taking executive action to address the situation, but there are concerns that legal challenges could delay this action.
