Texas Immigration Law Under Consideration by The U.S. Supreme Court

The U.S. Supreme Court is asked to consider a Texas immigration law, SB4, which is supposed to go into effect on March 10, 2024. The Texas immigration law allows local and state officials to arrest individuals they think are living in the U.S. without a legal basis. Further, judges will be given the authority to send these individuals deemed undocumented and in the United States illegally, to a port of entry and back to Mexico, regardless of their country of origin.

The Justice Department asked the Supreme Court to reverse a decision by the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals that allows the Texas law to go into effect. Previously, a lower court temporarily struck down the law. There have been many legal fights over the Texas State law since being signed by the Governor. If the Supreme Court does not take action, the law will go into effect.

Supreme Court Justice Alito paused the law until March 13, 2024, so the Court has time to consider what to do next.
