Immigration Surges to the Top of US Concerns

According to a recent Gallup poll, the top concern for people in the U.S. right now is immigration. This is the first time since 2019 that immigration has topped the list of American’s concerns. 28% of Americans identified immigration as the number one concern in the country, an increase of 8% since January 2024. The government was identified as the second problem, with 20% of respondents citing this as a concern. The ‘economy in general’ came in third, with 12% of the responses.

There is a difference in opinion about immigration between Republicans and Democrats. 57% of Republicans see it as the top concern, while only 10% of Democrats feel the same way. However, 55% of all U.S. adults believe immigration is critically important for the country. That is an 8% increase from 2023 and a record high on the perspective.

Immigration remains an important topic in Congress. However, there hasn’t been any real change in policy due to continued disagreements between the two political parties. Despite a group of Senators working on a proposal for months that appeared to reach middle ground, it was not taken seriously. The Senate did approve $95 billion in funding for foreign aid to help countries like Ukraine, Israel, and Gaza, but it has not moved forward yet.

President Biden is expected to talk with Congressional leaders about the proposed foreign aid bill and a potential government shutdown that will go into effect on Friday, March 1, 2024, if nothing is done.
