Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed three immigration-related bills making it a state offense to enter Texas without a legal basis. Senate Bill 4, known as the “Show Me Your Papers” law, criminalizes unlawful entry into Texas from Mexico. This legislation gives state and local law enforcement the ability to arrest those suspected of illegal entry, allowing judges to order deportation without prosecution.
Governor Abbott states increased illegal crossings are due to President Biden’s policy changes. In addition, funds are allocated for additional border wall construction. Effective in March 2024, the laws also include an allocation of $1.54 billion for border wall construction and $40 million for enhanced law enforcement patrols in Colony Ridge, a Houston-area neighborhood, identified by the Texas Governor as an area of concern.
Another signed bill raises the minimum sentence for smuggling immigrants or running a “stash house” from two to 10 years. Critics argue that these measures are unconstitutional and may lead to legal disputes with the federal government.
