Canada introduces a streamlined work permit program for U.S.-based H-1B specialty occupation visa holders. Effective July 16th, 2023, individuals holding U.S. H-1B visas and their immediate family members will be eligible to apply for the Canadian Work Permit Program.
The Government of Canada also announced significant updates to its Express Entry system. This system simplifies the application process for individuals with expertise in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. Canada aims to address the growing demand for STEM talent to advance the country’s technological advancement and overall economic growth.
The Canadian labor market is currently experiencing shortages across various sectors. By implementing the Canadian work permit program and enhancing the Express Entry process, it encourages individuals with valuable work experience and language proficiency to apply for permanent residence in Canada.
The first round for individuals with STEM expertise begins the week of July 5, 2023. This initial round will prioritize professionals such as data scientists, software developers and programmers, statisticians, actuaries, electrical and electronics engineers and mathematicians. Additional rounds targeting different professional categories will be announced in the following weeks.
