Additional 32 Immigration Judges Across 16 Courts Added by DOJ

The U.S. Department of Justice welcomes additional judges to immigration courts in California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New York, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. In total, 32 incremental judges were added. The new judges have backgrounds in immigration law, advising clients on their legal status, as well as work experience with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The new judges were named in October 2022. In total, for the year, DOJ has added 81 immigration judges.

The Attorney General appointed the new judges. Per the agency, they welcome additional applicants and are continuing to consider additional resources.  The addition of these judges may help with the ongoing backlog. Below are the number of judges added and their respective courts:

  • Annandale Immigration Court: 1 additional judge
  • Atlanta – W. Peachtree Street Immigration Court: 1 additional judge
  • Chicago Immigration Court: 2 additional judges
  • Worth Immigration Court: 1 additional judge
  • Hyattsville Immigration Court: 2 additional judges
  • Laredo Immigration Court: 1 additional judge
  • Los Angeles – Olive Street Immigration Court: 1 additional judge
  • Memphis Immigration Court: 1 additional judge
  • New York – Broadway Immigration Court: 1 additional judge
  • New York – Federal Plaza Court: 6 additional judges
  • New York – Varick Immigration Court: 1 additional judge
  • Orlando Immigration Court: 6 additional judges
  • Richmond Immigration Adjudication Center: 1 additional judge
  • Sacramento Immigration Court: 2 additional judges
  • San Francisco Immigration Court: 4 additional judges
  • Sterling (VA) Immigration Court: 1 additional judge
